The Marriage of Figaro by Beaumarchais was transformed by Mozart and his Italian librettist Da Ponte. Nevertheless, the original political intentions of the work were undermined by the imperial censure of Mozart’s Vienna. In Eric Emmanuel Schmitt’s revisited French text, he looks to revive the biting character of the original libretto without losing the beauty of the musical score. Excerpts of this new re-tanslation were performed in Paris’s Rive Gauche Theater in 2015 by Opera Fuoco and David Stern, who was intrigued by the subtle differences between Da Ponte and Schmitt. This performance will be a premiere of the integral Marriage de Figaro by Mozart and Eric Emmanuel Schmitt, reuniting the spirits of the 18th and 21st centuries.
